We don’t like to get ahead of ourselves, but when we heard Audi and Volkswagen were both working on light, hybrid vehicles that aimed to get 300 miles per gallon, we decided it was time to start a blog post series called:
JUNK CARS OF TOMORROW!
Despite its showiness, this series is humble. It’s about checking out the future of cars, and subsequently, the future of junk cars, should cars still be junked in the future. Without further ado.
Audi: The 1.0 Liter Car
Audi is reportedly working on a small, lightweight vehicle that’s created specifically to make other hybrids look like dumps. Ready for market by 2015 or 2016, the Audi ’1.0 liter’ car is small, light and potentially capable of reaching mpg above 230.

According to ExtremeTech.com:
The body would be a combination of lightweight steel, rather than aluminum, and carbon fiber. If it’s based on the Audi A1, it could be as much as 157 inches long (4.0m). It would seat four and have creature comforts such as air-conditioning.
The article failed to mention that this Audi model would also come with a feature that makes it driver feel automatically better looking, though this is still speculation.
Volkswagen: Concept Car Gone Conceptual
Leave it Volkswagen to create a concept car in 2002, improve it in 2009, then offer an even more improved version in late 2011. Such is the life of the L1, then labeled the XL1, which is also a lightweight, 1.0 liter vehicle that has the potential to get over 230 mpg.

Although the concept looks almost too futuristic, it’s reasonable to expect such a model enter the market within the next three to four years. And by then, we (surviving humans) might be able to grasp such a concept without feeling like we’re in an episode of Time Changers: Reluctanze, which is bound to be a real series eventually.
So if these are the cars entering the market in 2015-16, we expect to junk these bad boys by about 2028 or so, depending on their reliability. But if the present is any indication, reliability won’t be an issue.
